Ah, the bridesmaid dress! Known in folklore as a mythical, monstrous mess of taffeta and scratchiness, its reputation precedes it.

But 2014 promises to change all of that. Thanks to some flattering runway trends and pressure from bridesmaids who like to wear items more than once (or even upcycle), this promises to be the best year yet for bridesmaid dresses.

Florals ruled the runway for spring, and this translated into a very popular trend for bridesmaid dresses. Designers have mastered the look of beautiful graphic prints that pop in photographs, which makes these floral dresses ideal for weddings.

Lace has always been a perennial favorite wedding fashion, but this year expect to see even more of the fabric, in more daring iterations and beautiful, jewel-toned colors. Many celebrities have been seen in lace during recent red carpet events, and this trend will have staying power.

Another look that has rocked receptions is the asymmetrical bridesmaid dress. This is a fantastic look for bridesmaids who are looking for something to wear again, as asymmetrical looks are also ideal for cocktail parties. These dresses can be sexy or sweet, depending upon how they’re accessorized.

Crop-tops have been taking over street style, and this look has made its way to the altar as well, with subtle two-piece bridesmaid dresses offering a hint of fun.

Speaking of fun, some bridesmaid dresses have been offering hints of sparkles and sequins, a great way to glam up a dress and make the maid of honor feel like a star herself.

The back cut-out is another trend that is rocking red carpets and runways, and should be gracing bridesmaid dresses even more this year. It’s a great look for those who want to show a bit of skin while still remaining modest.

Blush and pewter have been highlighted as the hottest gown colors this year, with purple waiting in the wings, practically guaranteed to make thousands of dazzling appearances at altars this autumn.

Perhaps the most interesting trend of the year is mismatched bridesmaid gowns. Brides are finally acknowledging that their friends have different body shapes, and by allowing each woman to pick a dress within a certain style scheme or color family, they’re letting everyone at the wedding shine to their best of their ability.

Whether they’re holding bouquets or catching them, the bridesmaids of 2014 will be supported by some seriously stunning fashions this year.
